Colonic Hydrotherapy

What is Colonic Hydrotherapy?

Also known as a "colonic", or colon irrigation, colonic hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method for cleansing the colon of waste material by repeated, gentle flushing with water. A colonic treatment leaves you feeling clean, revitalised and well. The colonic treatment itself exercises and tones the bowel thus aiding the evacuation of waste both during and after treatment. The toxic load on the body is reduced.

What does a treatment involve?

No special preparation is necessary before your colonic treatment appointment, although large meals and lots of fluids are not advised. When visiting a registered colon hydrotherapist they will expect you to be nervous, but will put you at ease. The first appointment includes taking your case history, explaining the procedure and the treatment itself.

About 60 litres of filtered water are used per treatment, but only small amounts are allowed to enter the bowel at any one time, acting to dilate the lower bowel, stimulating the bowel to empty itself. In all, about 15 litres enters the bowel during treatment, and the vast majority also comes out again. The water pressure is carefully controlled and is in fact lower than is normally generated during a bowel movement.

What can Colonic Hydrotherapy treat?

Sluggish Colon, Candida, Constipation, Flatulence, IBS, MS, ME, Bloating, and much more.

How long does a treatment last?

Your first treatment will last between one hour and one and a quarter hours, and involves discussing your symptoms and full medical history. Subsequent appointments are 45mins to 1 hour.

How many treatments will I need? And how often?

This will vary from patient to patient and your practitioner will recommend the most suitable course of treatment for you during your consultation. As a general guideline, many patients will have several regular treatments initially and then continue regular treatments at greater intervals.

Does it hurt?

No, very rarely. You may feel tense or nervous but the Colonic Hydrotherapist is skilled at making you comfortable and putting you at ease. Sometimes during a colonic, you may experience some cramping as the colon muscles contract to release gas, waste matter and liquid but this will soon pass. Many people actually enjoy the treatment and feel lighter, more comfortable and clean afterwards.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Most people can benefit from Colonic Hydrotherapy, even those who think they have healthy bowels! There may be contraindications with certain medical conditions and your practitioner will discuss your health history with you in detail to ensure that the treatment is right for you.

How do I know if my practitioner is professionally qualified?

Your practitioner will have had training, experience and hold qualifications in Colonic Hydrotherapy. Many will also belong to a professional association. Please ask your practitioner if you would like to see certificates or would like contact details for the professional association.

How will I feel after a treatment?

Most people feel very good - refreshed, lighter and energized and many really enjoy the experience. You may feel light-headed or tired initially and you might prefer to take it easy for the few hours following treatment but you will be fully able to continue with your normal routine should you need to. Some people have more frequent bowel movements following treatment but there will not be any extreme urgency.
